Saints running on all Cylinders
We saw the first signs of life in Week 6 against Seattle. In Week 7, we witnessed that slow, faint heartbeat get stronger and more consistent. Now, the heartbeat is nearly pumping at full capacity, and a complete recovery is looking more and more probable.
Yes, my friends, it appears as though Drew Brees and company are once again alive and well.
Brees entered the 2007 season as a top 5 fantasy quarterback, and he was ranked as high as No. 3 by some pundits. Unfortunately, the early returns were not good. Through the first four games of the season, Brees tossed just one touchdown pass compared to a whopping nine interceptions, and he didn't hold a QB Rating over 74.1 in any contest as the Saints stumbled to an 0-4 record.
At this point, Brees is just outside the top 10 fantasy quarterbacks at No. 11, according to the trusty Rototimes.com Player Rater. However, if he takes advantage of his future matchups and continues his fine play, he could finish the second half the same way he entered the season - as a top 5 fantasy quarterback.
Brees isn't the only one who has experienced a turnaround, as the revival in New Orleans has also meant good things for second-year receiver Marques Colston. Although he has yet to top the 100-yard mark this season, Colston has caught four touchdown passes in the last three games (three of those came in Week 8). If you extrapolate Colston's current numbers over the rest of the season, he'd finish the year with 78 catches for 795 yards and 11 touchdowns. In standard formats, this would put his 2007 season right on par with his rookie campaign, as he posted 151.8 fantasy points last year, and he's on pace for 145.5 this season.
Then, of course, there's Reggie Bush. By most accounts, Bush has still been somewhat of disappointment this season. He's scored just two rushing touchdowns (none since Week 3), he's yet to post a 100-yard rushing game, and he's still averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. Still, while Bush averaged just 2.9 yards per tote through the first four games of the year, he's averaged 4.7 YPC over the last three.
On top of that, but Bush is also on pace to catch 98 passes this season, which would eclipse the 89 he caught last season. And if we need more reason to be optimistic about Bush this year, consider that every team the Saints are set to face over the next seven weeks rank 15th or worse against the run, which should help him push that yards-per-carry average over the 4.0 mark.
Quick thoughts for Week 8
So much for Kenton Keith getting consistent work in the Colts running game, huh? After receiving just one fewer carry than Joseph Addai in Week 7, Keith was limited to just six carries on Sunday against the Carloina Panthers , while Addai toted the rock 23 times on his way to two touchdowns and his third 100-yard rushing effort of the season. There may still be games in the future where both Addai and Keith receive double-digit carries, but make no mistake that Addai is still the workhorse in this offense.
Owners calling for Adrian Peterson to get the bulk of the workload in Minnesota, got their wish on Sunday, as the rookie got the start and carried 14 more times for Chester Taylor. Peterson didn't exactly take advantage of his newfound opportunity, though, as he averaged just 3.5 yards on his 20 carries, failed to find the end zone and did not catch a single pass for the first time this season. Regardless, that AD has taken over as the starter is great news for fantasy owners, and he should be considered a top 5 fantasy back for the remainder of the season.
Kevin Jones continued to establish himself as the man in Detroit, carrying 23 times for 105 yards and a score against the Bears on Sunday, and he's got a prime matchup in Week 9 against Denver, who is allowing 176.2 rushing yards per game this season. However, the Lions face the Vikings (3rd vs. run), Cowboys (5th vs. run) and Chargers (7th vs. run) in Weeks 13-15, so it may not be a bad idea to shop Jones around before the fantasy playoffs.
