Reggie Bush Can’t Elude This One At USC, there wasn’t an obstacle Reggie Bush couldn’t dodge or a hurdle he couldn’t leap over in his run to a Heisman Trophy. His latest road block, however, may cause him to stumble to controversy and bring added pain to a city already dealing with too much. Reggie Bush is in the ideal position of helping heal New Orleans, a city still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Instead, the second overall draft pick is in the process of helping tear New Orleans apart. The former USC running back seems to be eluding the Saints these days. The No. 2 pick has yet to come to terms with the organization, which isn’t good for the Saints, the people of New Orleans or Reggie Bush. It doesn’t appear Reggie Bush is in a hurry to jot his name on the dotted line and be ready to report to camp, which begins Thursday. The latest report has Reggie Bush sitting out the entire ’06 season and enter the draft again next April. What a disservice it would be to the people of New Orleans if it didn’t get the next great offensive weapon. Part of the problem lies with the Houston Texans and their selection of Mario Williams as the top pick last April. Most experts were stunned at the pick, thinking Reggie Bush was the clear-cut No. 1 pick. But Williams signed with the Texans before the draft and Reggie Bush believes he deserves to get top-pick money. The Saints see it differently and suddenly a spat has ensued. While it can be debated as to who is right or wrong, a holdout would be the worst scenario for Reggie Bush. Reggie Bush has already made numerous donations to hurricane relief. Fans were so thrilled at his draft selection that thousands of orders for his Saints jersey were in demand just after the weekend draft. What would it say to New Orleans if Reggie Bush held out? It would be a slap in the face. People in New Orleans don’t want to hear about a professional athlete not signing because of a few million dollars — especially considering those same people are still trying to piece their lives back together after losing everything they have. The Saints’ training camp will begin in a few days and it’s highly likely their main attraction will be a no-show. New Orleans needs someone to help bring the people together. Reggie Bush was an obvious candidate — not one to stir up controversy. Take a step back Reggie, New Orleans needs you on the field, not at home. Your presence is enough to make New Orleans residents briefly forget the horror that’s going on around them and turn their attention to a fun game, made better by your spot on the field. Try eluding that fact, Reggie. That’s right, you can’t.
