Reggie Bush is Struggling

I've already made my case that NFL rookie salaries are too high. But Reggie Bush signed a six-year contract with the Saints that guarantees him more than $26 million and could be worth up to $54 million, and it's difficult to express just how bad a runner Bush has been halfway through his rookie season.

Yesterday, Reggie Bush had 11 carries for negative-five yards. Yes, you read that right. Less than zero. Bush's 11 carries went like this: zero, minus four, minus three, zero, two, one, zero, minus one, zero, three and minus three yards. This season Bush has 81 carries for 207 yards. That's 2.55 yards a carry. That's terrible. According to the advanced stats at Football Outsiders, Reggie Bush has been the worst runner in the NFL this year.

It's true that Reggie Bush does more than run. He also catches passes (four for 22 yards yesterday) and returns punts (two for 20 yards). But he doesn't do $26 million worth of that. The Saints and Madison Avenue have already made Reggie Bush a star and a millionaire many times over. It's time for him to earn it.

Reggie Bush's inability to break a big run is perplexing. Though nobody expected him to match the 8.7 yards per carry he managed during his final season at USC, Bush is now averaging just 2.6 yards per carry on the season and has gained just 82 yards rushing on 47 carries in his last five games. Reggie Bush recently revealed that he has been bothered by a sprained ankle since Week 1 and that has likely factored into his lack of production. Regardless of the cause, Reggie Bush is a risky fantasy start at this point.
