Reggie Bush sat with celebrity girlfriend Kim Kardashian courtside at the New Orleans Arena on Monday night as Hornets guard Chris Paul dazzled the Chicago Bulls and just about everyone in attendance.
The New Orleans Saints running back feels the pressure as Bush is likely the Crescent City 's No. 2 star athlete under the age of 25, with Paul's nightly magic taking center stage these days.
"He's my neighbor, and we're friends," Bush said Tuesday. "I told him he's putting the pressure on me. Now I've got to come and have an equal or better year."
When statistics like 2,000 yards rushing and 30 touchdowns were tossed out to Bush as a benchmark, Bush replied, "Something like that. I've got to get the crowd chanting M-V-P."
Going into his third season, after being deemed almost Messiah-like when the Saints drafted Bush in 2006, Bush said he's taking a new approach to avoid the chant of B-U-S-T when he takes the field in the Louisiana Superdome later this year.
Instead of spending almost all of last year's offseason training in Southern California using the "Fre-Flo-Do" method and flying across the globe doing commercial spots, Bush said he plans on spending the majority of his offseason in New Orleans training with his teammates.
"I feel like I'm maturing and I feel like that's what it's all about," Bush said. "Maturing and learning. Going through life's experiences and football, it's the right thing to do is to be here and working out with my teammates. I'm going to be here as much as possible, as much as I can."
Saints coach Sean Payton didn't exactly approve of Bush's regimen a year ago. Payton was more than pleased when Bush told the Saints coach what his plans were for this offseason.
"He plans on being involved in all of our offseason, which is encouraging and good," Payton said. "I think it's important for him, especially running backs the pounding they take, to be real diligent in the weight room. That's his plans."
It's the start for what Bush hopes will be a tumultuous season for tacklers trying to halt him instead of one for himself.
Bush's 2007 statistics were all lower than his breakout rookie season. He rushed for 581 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 3.7 yards per carry. He also grabbed 73 catches for 417 yards and two scores.
Once fellow tailback Deuce McAllister went down with a season-ending knee injury, Bush was erratic when carrying the load as the team's feature running back. It brought about more carries for Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas.
