Bush ready to explode for Saints
You obviously saw it at a legendary clip in college. You can see it when you watch practice this summer. You can feel it when you talk to his Saints teammates. And I heard it on the phone on Tuesday.
It, of course, is the brilliance of Reggie Bush, who is about to explode on the NFL scene in his second year in the league.
As a rookie, Bush got injured in his very first pro game against Cleveland. He never hit his stride until the second half of 2006, when he finally got healthy and the game began to slow down for him. Down the stretch, Bush tormented the Cowboys, showing off all of his skills as a runner and receiver. He then overpowered the Giants in Week 16.
Bush tells us he spent the off-season doing an intense workout called "Fre Flo Do" to increase flexibility. This season he is going to be a major factor in Sean Payton's offense as a running back, receiver, ultimate decoy in misdirection, and cannot wait to be more involved as a kick returner to go along with his back-breaking role on the punt return team.
It's all part of what made him so special at USC.
Bush is ready for an enormous 2007.
Bush told us, "For me, I was just starting to get acclimated to the NFL game. I really only got comfortable half way through the season and at that point I started to do a better job running in between the tackles. This year, having that year experience under my belt is going to help a lot. It is about total touches. Our offense is so dynamic and we have so many good players that I don't think you can single it down to this amount of carries and this amount of catches and this amount of returns."
When you talk to his teammates, they tell you the last statement isn't lip service. The Saints are impressed just how team-oriented Bush is and how he will do anything to win.
And it is winning that fuels Bush.
"I want to be the team that everyone hates," He said. "I want to be the team where everyone in the league has to bring their "A" game to beat (us). And if you don't, it is going to be a long day for you. And for us, to have the mentality, no matter what any team brings to the table, we will beat them."
What really gets Bush excited about the team's chances is playing with Drew Brees and playing for Sean Payton.
"Drew Brees is like having a head coach in the huddle with you. He is so smart. He makes plays. And what I like is he really plays with a chip on his shoulder from all of his experiences. He is not afraid to take chances while still being fundamentally sound, very calm and never flustered in the pocket. He is the total package. The thing about this offense, we are so talented. It really reminds me of being at USC. Coach Payton reminds me of Coach Chow. They are guys who really love to mix it up on offense. They love to create mismatches and headaches for defenses. Coach Payton is just a great play caller."
The goal is to start what should be a promising 2007 season with a statement win in Indy tonight.
Bush cites Payton's play calling as the key to beating the Colts. And that's beating both the Indy defense and offense.
"The defensive ends, they get up the field fast. If you don't get a hand on them they can disrupt the passing game. Bob Sanders is a great safety. He'll come up and hit you. You have to be aware of his presence at all times. And the only way to neutralize a great player like Sanders is to come out and simply make plays. We want to control the game from the start. We want to establish tempo. And Indy has a great home-field advantage. I imagine it is going to be wild on opening night welcoming home the Super Bowl champs. We definitely want to take the crowd out of it. And you know their offense is going to make plays. You want to keep their offense off the field as well. Maybe it is running the ball and running the clock down a little bit. This game is going to be a huge test for us. Not only are we facing the Super Bowl champs, but we have the national spotlight. We relish these types of situations. This is going to be a test of where we stand mentally. But let's also remember, it is game one of a long season."
It should be a long season of promise and stardom for both Bush and the Saints.
