There are approximately 30,000 Fantasy Football Magazines on the counters of America.
That is why I felt the need to write a Fantasy Football Preview for WGR550.com.
Just in case the other 30,000 options didn’t appeal to you.
RUNNING BACKS
1. LaDainian Tomlinson- Chargers- Don’t over think this.
2. Larry Johnson- Chiefs- K.C. may have lost some pieces on their offensive line the past two years but Johnson is a bear. I’m a little worried that his production will go down with a new $45 million dollar contract. He’s still worth #2 with all of the upside.
3. Frank Gore- 49ers- Gore ran for close to 1,700 yards in ’06 but what is more impressive is his 61 receptions to lead San Fran. He averaged 8 yards a catch out of the backfield. I’m tempted to put him up to #3 and since it’s my list, that’s what I’m doing. Ignore the numbers. Gore is my new #2.
4. Steven Jackson- Rams- He’s Mr. Consistency. Which sucks for him because all of the lamest nicknames start with “Mr.”
5. Shaun Alexander- Seahawks- I’m betting Alexander will shake off the injuries from last year and have a good season.
6. Brian Westbrook- Eagles- Westbrook is my favorite running back. If not for injury concerns, I would put him right under Tomlinson.
7. Joe Addai- Colts- If you add Dominic Rhodes’ production to Addai’s numbers last year, he’s a top3 back. Indy spreads the ball around so much though, that I wouldn’t anticipate much more than 10 TD’s.
8. Reggie Bush- Saints- The word of the day is “upside”. Eight of Regie Bush’s touchdowns came in the final 5 weeks. He’s adjusted to the NFL and I’m expecting him produce even more points.
9. Willis McGahee- Ravens- Jamal Lewis was busted last year and he still scored 9 TD’s. You can bet that McGahee will be motivated for Baltimore’s game against the Bills too. That is unless he touches his toe to his thigh again.
10. Laurence Maroney- Patriots- It took me 20 minutes to remember what happened to Corey Dillon. I couldn’t remember where he signed. It turns out he was cut by the Pats and has yet to sign anywhere. The morale of the story is, Dillon scored 14 rushing touchdowns last year and now he’s replaced by a younger back with more upside. So Maroney is a good pick.
11. Travis Henry- Broncos- Henry is a high percentage player. 9 kids by 9 women. I know it’s irresponsible but it’s also amazing. I’m guessing a bunch of those relationships were one night stands which makes Travis a pretty potent individual.
12. Willie Parker- Steelers- Shame on me for doubting Willie. He scored 16 times last year. He’s also their only running back so giddy-up.
13. Rudi Johnson- Bengals- Johnson never gets injured and gets a ton of carries in a good offense. He’s Mr. Reliable which isn’t as cool as being Mr. Consistency but good enough to be drafted in the 2nd round of a Fantasy Draft.
14. Maurice Jones-Drew- Jags- Fred Taylor is a year older and Jones-Drew is one year more experienced. That sentence is a grammatical nightmare. Am I to assume that Maurice got married and added his wife’s name to his with a hyphen? I’ve taken to calling him Maurice Jones-Stamos.
15. Marshawn Lynch- Bills- I was excited about Lynch before the preseason started.
16. Marion Barber- Cowboys- Another back stung by the committee approach. Barber did score 16 touchdowns last year but I can’t see him reaching those numbers again.
17. Clinton Portis- Skins- If I drafted Portis in a Fantasy draft I would send Ladell Betts threatening letters. Portis was having a good year before injuring his hand. He missed 7 and a half games and still scored 7 TD’s.
18. Cedric Benson- Bears- He’ll be higher on most lists because Thomas Jones went to the Jets but I’m not sold on Benson. He only caught 8 balls last year and most Bear fans wanted Jones to stay. Upside: He’s not rex Grossman.
19. Edgerrin James- Cards- You can do worse than having James as your number 2 back. The Cardinals say that they’re going to emphasize the run more this season. Of course, that could be a ploy to fool other teams in the NFL. So if you think the Cardinals are a bunch of filthy liars, stay away from James.
20. Ronnie Brown- Dolphins- He was a high draft pick but the Dolphins only ran for 7 touchdowns last year. That number should improve with Cam Cameron as Coach. Cam is short for Cameron, right?
21. Deuce McAllister- Saints- A good back that will have most of his touchdowns stolen by Reggie Bush.
22. DeAngelo Williams- Panthers- Looks like he’ll beat out DeShaun Foster and he’s good catching the ball out of the backfield.
23. Ahman Green- Texans- I’m not a professional athelete but, since I’ve turned 30, every time I run up a flight of stairs my heart stops for 3 minutes. Lewis is over 30 now and battled hamstring problems last year.
24. Thomas Jones- Jets- Did NFL teams just take a bunch of Running Back names and throw them in a hat, shake it up and then distribute?
25. Cadillac Williams- Bucs- Bad news for Cadillac: He scored 1 TD last year. Worse news for Cadillac: The Bucs pull him on pass downs.
26. Jamal Lewis- Browns- Lewis once rushed for 2,000 yards in a season. That will be a nice thing for him to think about while he’s getting tackled in the backfield this year in Cleveland. At least he’s about 15 pounds fatter than he was in Baltimore.
27. Adrian Peterson- Vikings- If he wasn’t sharing carries he would be much higher on the list. Peterson hasn’t shown enough in the preseason to be ranked much higher than this.
28. Brandon Jacobs- Giants- At the brink of retirement, Tiki Barber rushed for over 1,600 yards and 5 touchdowns but Jacobs has nowhere near the talent of Barber. He’ll also share carries with Reuben Droughns.
29. Vernand Morency- Packers- Green Bay’s running game wasn’t horrible last year but this is a guy who was cast off by the Texans. Upside: He’s their starter.
30. LaMont Jordan- Raiders- Good news for people who wind up with Lamont Jordan and then are forced to put him into the lineup during another back’s bye week: Jordan ran for over 100 yards exactly once last year. If you play your cards right, you may pick his 100 yard week this year.
31. Warrick Dunn- Falcons- Jerious Norwood had a third of the carries Dunn had last year and would have been a more valuable Fantasy player if he didn’t injure his knee. Dunn is still the starter though and both backs will have more TD’s with Vick serving time for raising dogs and then training them to kill each other.
32. Kevin Jones- Lions- They picked up Tatum Bell who will eat into his carries. The Coaching staff is obviously not crazy about Jones. And I’m putting him last on my list because I’m still bitter about the time Dan Cave talked me into a trade for Jones in which I gave him Chad Johnson 3 years ago.
