"It seems as if there never is enough time off," said Saints running back Deuce McAllister after the team's opening day on Monday of Offseason Training Activities (OTA). "That's the way it is with your off-season program after playing in the postseason, but that's a good thing. If we could count on that every year with the offseason getting shorter and shorter, that means you're playing in the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl. But it was good to get back out there and be around the guys."
USA Today's special preseason football magazine has the Saints meeting the New England Patriots in the next Super Bowl.
Saints coach Sean Payton was pleased with the effort put forth by his players in the first of 12 OTA sessions.
"It's always good to get back on the field and get involved in practice and coaching all the little things." said the coach. "It gives you the opportunity to detail all you want to improve on from last season and introduce your new scheme. It's always good this time of the year to do that."
The players appear to have reported on good shape following seven weeks in strength and conditioning coach Dan Dalrymple's conditioning program.
"Dan and his staff have done a great job of working these guys both from the weights standpoint and the conditioning standpoint and it's evident when you watch a practice like this and see where they're at," said Payton.
One player who looked extremely sharp was quarterback Drew Brees. He zipped passes all over the field and appeared to be in midseason form with the completions he made to Marques Colston and Devery Henderson in the seven-on-seven drills. Joe Horn is in Atlanta now telling the media there how much he likes the idea of catching passes from Michael Vick.
"It's encouraging to see Brees out there because a year ago we were still going through the process of him being able to throw," said Payton. "Everything we did with Drew a year ago was more of a walk-though and it wasn't until training camp that we began to get throws from him. It's a credit to his timing and the way that he has prepared in this off-season. He's stayed in shape and he came into this OTA today and it obviously wasn't the first time he's thrown. That's a good thing.
"We've been doing our throwing sessions twice a week for the past four weeks so we've spent some time together,: said Brees. "Obviously that has been without any defense, but I just have to get where it's second nature and the guys know the route depths and they know when the football is coming out of my hand so we can get out there and forget that there's a defense out there and just play catch."
After one practice, Brees was excited about the possibilities for the 2007 Saints offense surpassing some of the gaudy numbers put up last season.
"We have a great group of receivers," said the quarterback. "We're already starting to see how it's all going to piece together. I'm excited about our options. Obviously we know what we were able to c\accomplish last year, but I feel like we can get so much better."
Safety Roman Harper took the field as the team's starter at his former spot before his knee surgery last season.
"That's was good." said Harper, when asked how it felt to get back on the field. "It showed the confidence the team has in me even though I missed most of last season. I guess they believe in what I did early and I showed them that I can still play a bit. I'm pretty confident how I'm coming along."
Of the 81 players at the mini-camp, 32 were experiencing their first full-squad practice with the Saints.
NFL Future: John Brantley John Brantley
In terms of being technically sound, there may not be a better quarterback in the nation than John Brantley. He has a live arm and spins the ball well even on the tougher deep balls and can hit the deep out with consistency. Throws well on the run especially to his right and makes good decisions with the ball.
