—After playing all of their exhibition games on the road last season because of repairs being made to the hurricane-damaged Superdome, the Saints will play two of their five preseason games at home this summer.

The Saints will make their exhibition return to the Superdome with home games against the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 10, in a game to be televised nationally by CBS, and face the Miami Dolphins on Aug. 30.

The Saints will play five preseason games this year. They will go against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, in a game to be televised by the NFL Network on Sunday, Aug. 5 (NFL Network).

They also will play at Cincinnati and Kansas City in the third and fourth weeks of the preseason with the exact dates to be announced.

"It's a good schedule for us," said general manager Mickey Loomis, whose team opens the regular season in a Thursday night matchup with the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 6. "We're excited about being on national television against Buffalo. And it's good to have a home game in the final week leading into the opener versus Indianapolis."

—The Saints continued to stock up on players in the back end of their secondary last week when they re-signed veteran safety Jay Bellamy to a one-year contract worth $820,000.

Bellamy, an unrestricted free agent, was a four-year starter until suffering a shoulder injury in Week 3 of the 2005 season. He was released before last season began, but rejoined the team after Roman Harper suffered a knee injury in Week 5.

Bellamy will likely be fighting for a backup job among a group of players that includes Harper, who started at strong safety before his injury, starting free safety Josh Bullocks, the recently signed Kevin Kaesviharn and Steve Gleason.

Bellamy, a 14-year veteran who'll turn 35 in July, started the final five games of 2006 after Omar Stoutmire injured his knee. Bellamy, a 5-foot-11, 200-pounder, has played in 176 games in his career and has 24 interceptions.

—Still looking for a veteran wide receiver after granting four-time Pro Bowl pick Joe Horn his release on March 1, the Saints hosted former New England Patriots standout David Patten last week.

Patten, a 5-10, 190-pounder, was released by the Washington Redskins last month after two disappointing seasons. He caught 23 passes with no touchdowns while battling knee and hamstring injuries.

However, Patten was a hit with the Patriots from 2001-04. In that stretch, he caught 165 passes for 2,513 yards and 16 touchdowns in helping the Patriots win three Super Bowl titles.

The Saints also visited with Brandon Stokley and Bobby Engram and may have talked to Keenan McCardell about shoring up their wide receiver spots. Stokley eventually signed with Denver and Engram re-signed with Seattle.

—The Saints' organization was among the many professional and college teams that were touched by the loss of former Grambling State football coach Eddie Robinson last week.

The team issued a statement in the wake of Robinson's death at the age of 88 to Alzheimer's disease. A Louisiana legend born and raised in Baton Rouge, Robinson won more than 400 games in a remarkable 55-year coaching career and sent more than 200 players to NFL training camps.

"It was with great sorrow that the New Orleans Saints organization learned of the passing of Eddie Robinson," the statement read. "He is a football legend for his contributions on the field, an innovator whose impact will forever be felt in the game.

"But that pales in comparison to the influence he had on shaping the lives and character of the young men who played for him. And because of his generosity and spirit, coach Robinson was also one of Louisiana's great ambassadors while representing our state's culture and its people. He will never be forgotten, and our condolences go to his family and loved ones."
