Boonton man scores big with Super Bowl tickets

Good stories only happen to people who know how to tell'em, so Fred Bona has a million.

But none top this one. The one about how he got tickets for tomorrow's Super Bowl.

"Oh, this is a great story," Bona begins by phone from Florida. "You got a few minutes?"

Bona is a "snowbird" who leaves the winters of North Jersey behind for a few months of tennis in sunny Bonita Springs, Fla. At 68, the retired vice president of corporate communications for WR Grace never misses a match.

"I play every day."

Some days are better than others. Like two Wednesdays ago, the week Bona's Giants beat the Green Bay Packers, in the NFC Championship game.

"I'm a big New York Giants fan. I've been a season ticketholder since the Meadowlands opened. What was it, 1976?

"Let me tell you a story about those tickets ...

"Our first seats were way, way up at the top of the stadium over the east end zone of the stadium. And every year I put in for an upgrade but never got one. So a few years go by, and I'm at a charity event with Wellington Mara. We get to talking and I tell him about the upgrade situation. He says, 'Call my secretary and I'll help you out.' So we're thinking, 'Great, maybe downstairs, maybe the 40-, 50-yard line!' I call the secretary, explain the situation and she says, 'Mr. Mara will take care of it.'

"So I get my upgraded ticket, and guess where I am? About 10 rows lower, still over the end zone, but on the west side of the stadium!"
